The Mural in Midtown Manhattan’s Architecture: 1950s to 1980s

Janes Walk

Led By Marcos Baer

The abstract mural came into its own In post-World War II New York as both architects and artists were interested in the mural as a way to integrate Architecture and Art. This tour will examine murals from the 1950s to the 1980s in mostly midtown commercial buildings and POPS (privately owned public spaces). Artists whose murals we will explore include Hans Hoffman, Harry Bertoia, Josef Albers, and Sol Lewitt. The tour will stop at buildings in the forties and fifties from Third Avenue to 10th Avenue. We will also walk through pedestrian passageways and, in the process, understand how changes in transportation and zoning impacted the establishment of plazas and pedestrian passageways.

This walk is sold out and the waitlist is closed.

Accessibility

We will be mostly at street level, without having to go on stairways. Yet, there will be a good amount of walking; approximately 2 miles in total. Midtown subway, bus and train stations will be very close.

Location Information

RSVP is required and capacity is limited. Meeting location, ending location, and directions will be provided via email before walk date.
