Hidden Treasures of Melrose in the South Bronx

Janes Walk

Led By David Herszenson

Melrose is a community in The South Bronx that is located north of Mott Haven and South of Morrisania. The neighborhood has a rich history and shows the influence of the various ethnic groups that called Melrose home including Germans, Polish, Italians, and Puerto Ricans. Some of the sites we will see are The Opera House Hotel, three 19th century German churches, the ruins of a brewery, and the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse. We will also see some of the community gardens and newer buildings that have appeared since the 1970’s when much of the housing stock was abandoned or burned.

Accessibility

This walk will be about one hour of walking along sidewalks. The total distance is a little more than a mile. There are Citibike Stations throughout the neighborhood. The beginning of the walk is located near the 2/5 149th Street 3rd Avenue station. The end of the walk is near a bus stop that can bring you to the 161st Street Yankee Stadium subway station (4 and D) in a couple stops.
