Description: At various times, Midland Beach has been known as the location of the Vanderbilt estate, a US Army installation, an array of summer vacation attractions, and a homeless shelter. Today, it is a community damaged by Hurricane Sandy that is looking for a new identity: can former beach bungalows be brought up to code? Will too much new, flood-proof housing cause gentrification? What areas should not be rebuilt? Tour with local residents and Sandy volunteers to get the "play-by-play" of hurricane recovery told through stories and locations of the rebuilding effort. Hear how individuals stepped up to the challenge of organizing a grassroots recovery. Then follow the walk up Lincoln Avenue towards Todt Hill to see how the conversation between more permanent, upland areas and the beachfront can be the answer to revitalizing a neighborhood.

Description: Take the Staten Island train to the end of the line! You are now at the southern most part of New York. The ruins of the ferry dock to Perth Amboy are still visible. From here we will take a leisurely stroll through the history of the town of Totenville--a small area once known as Biddle's Grove where it was a place to picnic and relax. We will see many large homes along the way--the "homes that the oyster built." Oysters played a key role in the development of the town and made more than a few residents quite well off; some of their homes still survive. The Biddle house, a New York City landmark built in the 1850's will remind you of Tara, from Gone With the Wind. Our journey will end at the magnificent English stone manor house, The Conference House, built in 1680. This home on Sept 11,1776 was the site of a failed peace conference between the English and the Americans which is open for tours .
Meeting Place: Outside the Tottenville Station which is the last stop on the Staten Island Rapid Transit System. The train to Totenville can be picked up at the ferry and the train will take 45 minutes.
Ending Place: Conference House Park, Staten Island
