Making it in New York: The Manufacturing Land Use and Zoning Initiative

The Manufacturing Land Use and Zoning Initiative was launched in 1999 by the Municipal Art Society in partnership with Pratt Institute for Community and Environmental Development (PICCED) to identify issues and aopportunities facing manufacturing districts and mixed-use communities in New York City. In this 2001 report, you can read more about New York City’s manufacturing sector, a mix of small and mid-sized production businesses and niche firms integrally related to new York’s economic drivers, including finance, creative, cultural and healthcare industries. New York City’s land-use policies shoudl promote diversification of the economy. The report provides recommendations on how the city can retain and revitalize the city’s manufacturing base and gives examples detailing where and when it is appropriate to do so.
