Since 2001, The Municipal Art Society has been pressing for a better plan for Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center (1956-62) at JFK airport, a New York City landmark and icon of modern design. The MAS convened a group of architects to come up with an alternative plan and successfully nominated the terminal to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of the 11 Most Endangered Places. The Port Authority recently announced it plans to reopen Saarinen’s terminal as part of a new JetBlue Airlines terminal. The MAS is delighted that the original building will continue to be used, but remains concerned that the trumpet-shaped departure lounge that was cut apart from the rest of the structure in 2007 will not be rehabilitated.
