Director of Planning

Major Responsibilities

The Planning Director is a key member of the Planning staff, responsible for reinforcing the efforts of the MAS planners, able to support strategies which will further the organization’s planning mission. This is a full time position.

Under supervision of the Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, with latitude for independent judgment, will manage research and analysis activities of the Planning division/department and implement initiatives in support of the organization’s policies and goals:

Using knowledge of the physical, social and economic structure of New York City, able to evaluate long range and short term city planning issues as they relate to urban design and the role of the public realm;

Conduct research, data gathering and analysis, interviews;

Create and deliver PowerPoint presentations and effectively communicate key project findings and recommendations;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other professional associates.

Qualifications

- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a degree in architecture, urban design, architectural studies or a related discipline;
- Completion of a two-year Master’s degree program in urban planning, urban design, environmental design or a related discipline;
- Five years or more of experience working in the field in New York City;

Additional Requirements

- Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend hours as necessary;

- Ability to prioritize among competing requests;

- Project management and supervisory experience;

- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access);

- Strong written and oral skills; ability to prepare and make presentations

Preferred skills:

Familiarity with WordPress, the Adobe Design Suite, and/or experience with statistical software such as SPSS.

Salary and benefits:

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. We offer health and dental plans and participation in 403(b) plan with employer matching after two years.

Internship Opportunities

Development and Fundraising Intern
The MAS Development and Fundraising Intern will support the Development department on a number of research and administrative tasks. The Intern will work on a variety of projects requiring great energy, enthusiasm, and attention to detail. Specific tasks and projects include:

-       Contribute to an organizational index / directory for MAS Board Members (called the “Board Book”).
-       Communicate with corporations regarding sponsorship opportunities for MAS programming.
-       Data entry using Raisers Edge.
-       Research event space for MAS public programs and cultivation events.
-       Help department staff set up for MAS public programs and events.
-       Filing and photocopying as needed by department staff.

Volunteer Opportunities

Do you love New York City? Teach a young person to love it too.

CITI Youth Volunteer Mentors 2010 are now needed!

The CITI Youth program (www.myciti.org) introduces local high school students to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology and how it can be used as a significant tool for community decision-making. Students receive paid internships as Map Technicians at their local community boards.

The Municipal Art Society is searching for over a dozen CITI Youth Volunteer Mentors. This exciting position acts as a volunteer mentor and role model to one or two motivated students.

We are looking for volunteer mentors to accompany students to meetings, provide assistance with equipment setup, encourage students to think critically about the urban planning and community development issues facing their neighborhoods and to help with overall professional development.

Are you comfortable working with teens? Are you familiar with NYC community boards and NYC planning/development issues? Can you set up laptops, projector and internet connections (training provided)? Do you have 1-2 evenings plus an additional 2-3 hours available per month? Are you well organized and responsible? We need you!

Walking Tour Volunteers

MAS is looking for individuals to accompany weekend walking tours and/or our lunchtime tours of Grand Central Terminal that take place every Wednesday. Tour assistants will support the MAS Tour Guide by collecting the money and taking down the names and email addresses of tour takers. We are looking for friendly, approachable, people with the ability to volunteer at least 1x-2x a month. Walking tours last two hours. Our Tour Assistants receive free admission to all MAS walking tours.
